The Dessen family escaped an army of Jasons. Apparently, that was the easy part. Apple TV has released the official trailer for Dark Matter season 2, pulling Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly back towards the Box as their supposedly safe new reality begins to fracture. Unveiled at Comic-Con, the trailer promises fresh worlds, dangerous doubles and a family once again forced to run. Watch it above and read on for what to know.
World 26 Is Not the Safe Haven It Appears to Be
Season 1 ended with Jason, Daniela and Charlie abandoning their increasingly crowded Chicago reality and stepping through a doorway in the Box in search of somewhere safer.

Season 2 reveals that the Dessens have settled into a peaceful new reality known as World 26. Unsurprisingly, domestic calm does not survive the trailer for very long.
Jason remains fascinated by the Box and everything waiting behind its endless doors. Daniela is far less eager to keep tempting the multiverse, becoming convinced that even a perfect world cannot protect them from another Jason. Charlie, meanwhile, simply wants the kind of stable life his parents can no longer promise him.
The Box Has Become Everyone’s Problem
The danger is no longer centred on one man stealing another version of his life. The trailer expands the crisis across multiple realities, with Jason pulled deeper into the Box while Daniela and Charlie find themselves running from another threat.
Amanda, played by Alice Braga, is also back. She joins forces with Jimmi Simpson’s Ryan as the pair desperately search for a way home. Elsewhere, Amanda Brugel’s Blair is determined to stop Dayo Okeniyi’s Leighton, who remains fixated on using the multiverse to create his idea of a perfect world.
“This ends if we destroy the Box,” someone declares as the trailer shifts into full-scale pursuit mode. That solution sounds simple enough. The obvious complication is that Jason may be the person least willing to let the Box go.
Edgerton, Connelly, Braga, Simpson, Okeniyi, Oakes Fegley and Brugel are all returning. Crouch continues as creator, showrunner, writer and executive producer, with Matt Tolmach, Richard Lederer and Ben-Zekry also serving as executive producers. Edgerton and Connelly executive produce in addition to starring.
Season 2 Is Heading Completely Beyond the Novel
The new season is stepping into particularly uncertain territory. Season 1 exhausted the central story of Crouch’s bestselling 2016 novel, leaving the writers without a published sequel to follow.
Crouch and executive producer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry co-wrote all 10 episodes, building an original continuation around the characters and worlds left behind by the first season. Speaking with Collider at Comic-Con, Crouch admitted that leaving the security of his novel was more than a little intimidating.
“Being off-book for the second season literally scared the shit out of me, because we didn’t save anything in the book. We blew through everything. We were like, ‘I don’t know if we’re going to do any more of this. Let’s not hold anything back.’”
The team was not only thinking about the immediate continuation. Ben-Zekry revealed that seasons 2 and 3 were developed together, with the writers envisioning the entire series as a three-part story.
“When we were designing Season 2 and pitching it, we actually did Season 3 kind of at the same time, because we imagined it as a trilogy. We really wanted to do the beginning, middle, and end of a story. So, you’ll see when you see this season. It’s definitely set up for more.”
Apple has not officially announced a third season, so the trilogy remains the creative team’s intended destination rather than a confirmed order. Season 2 is nevertheless designed to leave the door open for a concluding third chapter.
When Does Dark Matter Season 2 Premiere?
Dark Matter season 2 premieres globally on Apple TV on August 28, 2026, with the first of 10 episodes. A new episode will follow every Friday through the season finale on October 30.
The show’s return will also expand the multiverse beyond the screen with Dark Matter: The Official Podcast. Hosted by Crouch and Ben-Zekry, the companion series will explore each episode, the science behind the show and how season 2 moves beyond the original novel. A catch-up instalment will arrive ahead of the premiere, followed by new podcast episodes throughout the season.
