The first trailer has arrived for Dark Phoenix, and it’s a big one.
The focus of this upcoming X-Men film is Jean Grey – Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner reprising her X-Men: Apocalypse role as the powerful mutant. Grey is hit with an all-powerful cosmic force that makes her infinitely more powerful and unstable. As she spirals out of control, the X-Men are split apart, with Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) on either side.
Plus, Jessica Chastain is on board as a mysterious, villain-leaning character named Smith.
“Her character is way, way smarter than we are. What she realizes is she can use [Jean Grey] to manipulate this world, to turn it against itself,” Chastain has said in an interview with EW.
“Simon [Kinberg, writer/director] and I first sat down in Montreal and we were talking about the character and I said ‘I don’t know if this is right but I keep thinking of the vet who tells you you need to put your dog down. There’s something very clinical about it.’ He loved it and we kind of expanded the character from there.”
While it certainly seems like we’ve done this Xavier vs. Magneto thing a few too many times now, this looks like a pretty exciting film in the ever-unfolding franchise. It’s great to have McAvoy and Fassbender still on after many years, and in a chapter that could see some very big developments and some very enticing possibilities for the future of the franchise. We’ll see.
Simon Kinberg, who’s very well versed in the X-Men cinematic universe, having been involved with X-Men films as producer and/or writer since 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, makes his feature directorial debut here. He’s also written the screenplay.
Dark Phoenix, also starring Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Evan Peters, will be hitting Aussie cinemas from 7 February 2019 and US cinemas from 14 February 2019.
