The first official images have been released of Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey promoting The Dark Tower, the highly anticipated upcoming Stephen King adaptation.
Shared as part of Entertainment Weekly‘s ‘Dark Tower’ special, the image above sees Elba in character as our protagonist, Roland Deschain, aka The Gunslinger, while the cover below features Elba’s Gunslinger alongside the film’s antagonist, McConaughey’s Man in Black.
The film will tell of a Gunslinger that roams an Old West-like landscape in search of the dark tower, in the hopes that reaching it will preserve his dying world.
EW interviewed Elba for the special issue, gathering further clarification of his character in the process.
“When we meet Roland he’s a bit lost. He’s been walking around for a long time, so he definitely feels like a man who’s… coiled.”
In the parlance of King’s books, Roland “has forgotten the face of his father.” “That’s a sense of, ‘You’ve forgotten your purpose,’” Elba says. At the start of the film, Roland is driven by rage, but deep down he is something else. “He’s a protector,” Elba says. He just needs something to reawaken that part of himself.
Directed and co-written by Nikolaj Arcel, who co-wrote the Swedish Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and directed/co-wrote the period drama A Royal Affair, The Dark Tower is scheduled to open in the U.S. on February 17, 2017 and in Australia on February 23, 2017.
