‘The Unsound’: Netflix and ‘Shazam’ Director to Tackle Asylum Horror Based on Comic Book

Warner Bros.

Director David F. Sandberg has lined up his next film following three hit features: Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation and Shazam!.

Sandberg will next be directing Netflix horror film The Unsound, based on the BOOM! Studios’ graphic novel by Cullen Bunn & Jack T. Cole. The script will come from up-and-comer Skylar James, whose script 29 Mole Street has landed top spots on screenplay lists Bloodlist and Hit List, and who is also a writer on upcoming Netflix series Green Beret’s Guide to Surviving the Apocalypse.

The Unsound follows a psychiatrist who returns to the insane asylum where her mother once worked and is now a patient, hoping to quell a bloody wave of horror that’s been unleashed. As she descends down the rabbit hole and discovers hard truths about her own past, she comes to understand the hospital is hiding secrets of its own, and perhaps she and her mother have more in common than she realized.

Sandberg, who will also be producing The Unsound with Lotta Losten under their newly created production banner Mångata, has had a very impressive few years. After his short film Lights Out went viral, Hollywood noticed, leading the Swedish filmmaker to score a directing gig to make the feature version – with none other than James Wan producing. It went well, leading him to Annabelle: Creation, which Wan also produced and grossed over $US450 million worldwide. Warner Bros, clearly happy with what they’d seen so far, then placed him at the helm of DC movie Shazam!.
