You can mark those calendars: Aquaman 2 now has its release date.
News of a sequel didn’t come as a surprise to anyone, considering how big of a hit Arthur Curry’s first solo big-screen outing has been. The film has earned a massive $US1.13 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing DC film of all time – so far. It made more than any Batman or Superman movie, and more than that movie with Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman.
Aquaman 2 has been scheduled to hit US cinemas on December 16th, 2022. As it’s still some way away, as of now there’s not too much competition lined up around the same time. US release dates have an untitled live-action Disney film also scheduled for that weekend and Despicable Me studio Illumination Animation has a film set for December 21st.
Set to write the sequel is David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, James Wan’s long-time collaborator who co-wrote Aquaman and The Conjuring 2. Aquaman director Wan is overseeing the sequel’s development and may be on board to direct, although he’s waiting to see how the script unfolds first.
Apart from the sequel, there’s also a spinoff on the way set to focus on The Trench, which we saw in Aquaman‘s horror-esque night time monster sequence. To be written by up-and-coming screenwriters Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald, The Trench will apparently not feature any of the main cast members from Aquaman. Details on this one are being kept in the deep end.
