20th Century Fox is looking to expand their superhero brands. Among them is Deadpool, which reportedly has a third film already in the works.
Deadpool 2 took a bit of a surprising turn when it was announced that director Tim Miller was exiting the project, the apparent result of creative conflict between the director and star/producer Ryan Reynolds. Fox is determined to move past it quickly, placing Miller at the helm of possible sci-fi franchise starter Influx and starting negotiations with John Wick‘s David Leitch to direct the sequel.
And Deadpool 3 is now in the works. THR reports that Fox is taking the first steps towards a third chapter, kicking off a search for a director.
The third film will reportedly have a plot that involves the X-Force, which was originally a revamped version of the 1980s team, the New Mutants, in the comics. X-Force takes a more militant and aggressive approach towards its enemies compared to the X-Men. The team’s first leader was the mutant Cable, a still-not-yet-cast character that is to have a big role in Deadpool 2. Other characters that have, at one point or another, been involved with X-Force include Colossus, Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops and Psylocke.
Deadpool‘s huge worldwide pull of $US782.6 million – off a production budget of $US58 million no less – has paved the way for what could be quite the franchise. Assuming everything goes to plan, the Merc with a Mouth will be having big-screen adventures for quite sometime.
Deadpool 2 is scheduled for US release on March 2, 2018.
