Rawson Marshall Thurber, the director of last year’s hit-comedy We’re the Millers, has been attached to direct a film based on the classic Choose Your Own Adventure book series. THR has reported that John Davis (iRobot, Chronicle) and John Fox are to produce the adaptation for Twentieth Century Fox.
Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, the two writers behind Fox’s Night at the Museum franchise, have entered final negotiations to pen the screenplay. There is no word as to which direction the writers will be taking, but the many books, covering many genres, ensures that they will have plenty source material from which to gather inspiration. Considering the family friendly projects that writers Garant and Lennon have been attached to in the past, including The Pacifier and Herbie Fully Loaded, we’re going to assume that the film will be an adventure film aimed squarely at the PG-market.
The Choose Your Own Adventure book series made its mark in the reading world by having the reader assume the role of the protagonist, allowing them to make choices that determine the main character’s actions and the plot’s outcome. When the series was published by Bantam Books, it was one of the most popular children’s series, selling more than 250 million copies during the 1980s and 1990s. Unfortunately for Bantam Books, they allowed the Choose Your Own Adventure trademark to lapse. The series was relaunched by Chooseco, which now owns the trademark.
