A sequel to 2013’s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is on the way, and Paramount Pictures has locked in their director.
Deadline is reporting that Bruno Aveillan, who’s earned acclaim as a commercials director, will be making his feature directorial debut with the film. Aveillan’s work consists of slick shorts for brands, one of which we’ve included at the bottom of this post.
Hansel & Gretel 2 will apparently be continuing on with the story of the titular siblings, although there’s no official word as to whether or not Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton will be reprising their roles.
Tommy Wirkola, the writer and director of the first film, last year said that he’d penned an R-rated screenplay for the follow-up that Paramount “really liked”. The Deadline report doesn’t reveal whether it’s Wirkola’s screenplay that is being used.
While Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters didn’t receive an overly positive critical reception, although the film’s worldwide gross of $226 million – on an estimated budget of $50 million – meant that a sequel was very much possible.
The sequel is to be produced by Adam McKay, Will Ferrell and Kevin Messick under the Gary Sanchez Productions umbrella, and Beau Flynn and his FlynnPictureCo.
