‘Doctor Sleep’: Final Trailer for ‘The Shining’ Sequel Revisits the Overlook Hotel with Ewan McGregor

Take a look at the final trailer released for Doctor Sleep, the upcoming horror film based on Stephen King’s sequel to his 1977 bestseller The Shining.

Ewan McGregor plays Danny Torrance, who we saw riding his Big Wheel and meeting creepy twins as a toddler in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 classic. King, by the way, has long criticised that film for its departures from his book. Let’s hope he’s happy with this adaptation, which has him on board as an executive producer.

The film catches up with a now-adult Torrance as he encounters a teenage girl (Kyliegh Curran) that also has his powerful extrasensory gift. Together they must face the merciless Rose the Hat (played by Rebecca Ferguson) and her followers, who feed off the innocents that hold this power.

We should be in good hands here. Directing and writing is Mike Flanagan, who delivered an impressive King adaptation with Netflix film Gerald’s Game and earned wide acclaim for creating and directing every episode of Netflix horror series The Haunting of Hill House. His other credits include Oculus, Hush, Before I Wake and Ouija: Origin of Evil.

Doctor Sleep, also starring Carl Lumbly, Zahn McClarnon, Emily Alyn Lind, Bruce Greenwood, Jocelin Donahue, Alex Essoe and Cliff Curtis, arrives in Australia on November 7 and opens in the US on November 8.

Official synopsis for Doctor Sleep:

“Doctor Sleep” continues the story of Danny Torrance, 40 years after his terrifying stay at the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson and newcomer Kyliegh Curran star in the supernatural thriller, directed by Mike Flanagan, from his own screenplay based upon the novel by Stephen King.

Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra, a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine.” Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality.

Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra’s innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before—at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past.
