‘Doctor Sleep’ Trailer: Ewan McGregor is an Older Danny in ‘The Shining’ Sequel

Warner Bros.

The trailer has been released for Doctor Sleep, an upcoming sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror classic, The Shining.

Ewan McGregor stars as Danny Torrance, the little boy from the first film, in this follow-up that picks up 40 years after the events at the Overlook Hotel. Danny’s been trying to live something resembling a normal life while dealing with the trauma of what he experienced as a child, but any chance of peace is shattered when he meets a teen (Kyliegh Curran) with the same power, the extrasensory gift known as the “shine.” She wants his help to stop Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson) and her followers, who feed off the shine of kids to live forever.

It’s easy to roll the eyes at the countless sequels Hollywood churns out, especially a sequel to a classic like The Shining. But this one does have a couple of promising elements. Firstly, it’s based on King’s own novel sequel and isn’t just a producer-manufactured cash in, and secondly, it’s from writer-director Mike Flanagan. Horror hounds should be growing increasingly familiar with Flanagan, who was behind Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House and whose feature credits include impressive horror outings Oculus, Hush, Before I WakeOuija: Origin of Evil and Gerald’s Game, the latter an impressive King adaptation.

Finger crossed for this one. Doctor Sleep, also starring Carl Lumbly, Zahn McClarnon, Emily Alyn Lind, Bruce Greenwood, Jocelin Donahue, Alex Essoe and Cliff Curtis, arrives in Australia on November 7and hits US cinemas on November 8.

Official synopsis for Doctor Sleep:

“Doctor Sleep” continues the story of Danny Torrance, 40 years after his terrifying stay at the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson and newcomer Kyliegh Curran star in the supernatural thriller, directed by Mike Flanagan, from his own screenplay based upon the novel by Stephen King.

Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra, a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine.” Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality.

Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra’s innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before—at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past.
