In a bit surprising casting news, action star Dolph Lundgren is set to join Jason Momoa in Warner Bros.’ Aquaman.

Lundgren is poised to make a return to big-screen studio fare with a role in Aquaman, the studio tentpole picture expected to start production in Australia in May. THR reported the news, revealing that Lundgren will be playing King Nereus, the leader of the aquatic kingdom of Xebel. In the comics, Nereus claims Aquaman’s love interest Mera as his own and intends to kill our hero. Amber Heard plays Mera in the film.

The veteran action movie star joins an impressive cast that includes Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna, Aquaman’s mother; Patrick Wilson as Orm, a villain and Aquaman’s half brother; Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko, Aquaman’s scientist adviser; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Aquaman’s classic foe; and Temuera Morrison is Aquaman’s father, Thomas Curry.

Director James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring, Furious Seven) confirmed the casting news:

Lundgren’s many credits include Rocky IV (where he played Soviet boxer Drago opposite Stallone), Masters of the Universe (he was He-Man), ’89’s The Punisher, Universal Soldier and The Expendables franchise. The actor is perhaps not as popular now as he was in his heyday, but the man hasn’t slowed down in the slightest. He had six feature films in 2016 alone and has had a recurring role as Konstantin Kovar in The CW’s Arrow.

Aquaman is scheduled to open in the US on December 21, 2018.
