The rumours have been circulating for some time, but HitFix has confirmed that Don Cheadle will be playing Col. Rhodes, aka War Machine, in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. War Machine is said to have “a key role in the conflict with Ultron that is the main focus of the sequel.”
This doesn’t really point towards how big a role War Machine will play in the sequel, but it does suggest that Marvel is aligning their steps for the future of the Iron Man franchise, considering Robert Downey Jr. hasn’t signed on for any further standalone films. HitFix says that “major changes are coming” for the group of superheroes; suggesting that the group will be broken up by the end of the second film in order to reassemble to stand against Thanos in Phase Three.
While plot details for the mammoth sequel are hard to come by, it is known that production is set to start in London next March.
Don Cheadle’s War Machine will join new characters Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), and villain Ultron (James Spader).
The Avengers currently holds the enviable position of being the third highest grossing film of all time, behind James Cameron’s Avatar and Titanic. The huge Marvel film brought in over $1.5 billion in worldwide box-office receipts. Can the follow-up beat this effort?
The Avengers: Age of Ultron is set to open in the U.S. on May 1, 2015.
