Dwayne Johnson to Star as Hawaiian king in Epic Robert Zemeckis Movie

Paramount Pictures

Well, this certainly sounds enticing.

Dwayne ‘there must be ten of me because I am everywhere’ Johnson has signed up to star in a biopic to be directed by Oscar winner Robert Zemeckis, whose many credits include the Back to the Future trilogy, Forrest Gump, Cast Away and Flight.

As per Deadline, Johnson will be starring in The King, an epic that will tell the story of Hawaiian king Kamehameha. The film will tell of the legendary king who shaped Hawaii’s destiny by uniting the warring islands, fulfilling the prophecy that had circled him since birth.

The high-profile project has gathered serious talent. Not only is Johnson starring and Zemeckis is directing, on board to write the screenplay is Randall Wallace, who wrote Mel Gibson’s Best Picture-winning Braveheart. They’re aiming for an epic here, and it looks like they have the perfect team.

“Humbled & grateful to begin this once in a lifetime journey,” Johnson posted on Instagram. “From the day I began my Hollywood career (2001), my dream was to bring this legacy to life.  In Polynesian culture we have a belief, that something isn’t done when it’s ready… it’s done when it’s right. The time is right”

New Line Cinemas and Warner Bros. won the bidding for this big project, which Johnson has been passionate about since his Scorpion King days. The King is scheduled to begin filming in 2020.

Johnson is currently filming Disney adventure Jungle Cruise with Emily Blunt. Zemeckis’ next film, the Steve Carell-starring Welcome to Marwen, opens in the US on the 21st of November and arrives in Australia on the 10th of January 2019.
