The first trailer has arrived for Eddington, the latest feature from Hereditary, Midsommar and Beau is Afraid filmmaker Ari Aster. He’s made his name with the unsettling, horrifying, bizarre, but could this see Aster going all-out political? Perhaps, but you just know Aster won’t be going down a conventional route. Take a look above and learn more below.
The film is set in May 2020, in the fictional New Mexico town of Eddington. It’s at the height of the global pandemic, and Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) is in an escalating feud with Mayor Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal). The two officials clash over public messaging and leadership, while unrest brews across a divided community.
“If you value your life, you should think twice, because the people of Eddington like guns,” warns Phoenix in a televised address — one of many snippets viewed via a scrolling social media feed in the teaser. The social feed includes Emma Stone, who plays Cross’s wife, Louise. “I’m speaking now to deny my husband’s announcement yesterday, which was false,” she says, publicly distancing herself from his comments. There’s also Austin Butler, playing a cult-like figure rallying followers in a video captioned, “Take back your mind. Reclaim your identity.”
