Oscar-nominated actor Elliot Page, formerly known as Ellen Page, has announced he is a transgender person and non-binary, meaning that their gender identity is neither man nor woman.
Page took to social media with the announcement, describing his pronouns as he/they. “I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life,” they said. “I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey. I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.”
Page continued: “To all the trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse, and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you, and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better.”
As for Page’s role in superhero series The Umbrella Academy, Netflix has made it clear that there will be no recasting. Page plays Vanya Hargreeves, arguably the most powerful member of the academy with the ability to harness sound and convert it into energy.
“So proud of our SUPERHERO,” read the Netflix reply to Page’s announcement on Twitter. ” WE LOVE YOU ELLIOT! Can’t wait to see you return in season 3!”
Apart from Page staying on Vanya, there will also be no move to make the character transgender as well. According to Variety, “there are no plans to change the character’s gender.”
Netflix is currently in the process of changing Page’s name on their credits – across all content that features the actor. Page’s IMDb profile has been updated as well.
