Blunt played idealistic FBI agent Kate Macer in the first film, directed by Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Arrival) and co-starring Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin. While she doesn’t star in the upcoming sequel, which will continue on with Del Toro and Brolin’s characters, there’s a good chance the third film will bring Macer back.
Producer Trent Luckinbill has revealed to CinemaBlend that Blunt is being eyed for Sicario 3, which Oscar-nominated screenwriter Taylor Sheridan already “has some ideas about.”
“Sure. Yeah. Absolutely. I think Taylor certainly has some ideas about all of that, but we’re open to that world and certainly would love to bring Emily back. We haven’t written the script yet, but yeah it would make a lot of sense,” Luckinbill said.
“We’re all fans of the movie, we’ve all come to the same conclusion, which is ‘It would be great to see her again.’ So I think we’re striking up those conversations now.”
Bringing back Macer would be a smart way to close off a trilogy; fingers crossed Blunt signs up. Of course, it remains to be seen if the in-demand actress can fit the project into her schedule and whether Day of the Soldado brings in decent enough numbers in the first place. We’ll see.
Sicario: Day of the Soldado, also starring Isabela Moner, Jeffrey Donovan Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Catherine Keener, arrives in Australia on June 28 and opens in the US on June 29.
