‘Equals’ Trailer: Kristen Stewart, Nicholas Hoult Feel Love in a Blue Future

A24 has unveiled an official trailer for Equals, the upcoming sci-fi romance starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult.

The film sees Stewart and Hoult playing Nia and Silas, two workers in a futuristic society where human emotions have been genetically eliminated in an attempt to stop all crime and violence. But wouldn’t you know it; Nia and Silas soon begin to have feelings for one another – a complete no-no in this seemingly utopian world.

Equals has received mixed reviews on the festival circuit, which kicked off with its premiere at the Venice Film Festival last September. While Stewart and Hoult are good performers, it remains to be seen whether there’s enough of value going on among the forbidden-love-in-an-oppressive-future tropes shown off in the trailer below.

The film does actually have a few things going for it. Apart from Stewart and Hoult, the film is directed by Drake Doremus, who helmed the solid romance-drama Like Crazy, and comes with a screenplay penned by Moon co-writer Nathan Parker. We’ll see.

Equals, also starring Guy Pearce, Jacki Weaver, Bel Powley and Kate Lyn Sheil, will be available exclusively on DirecTV starting May 26 and will hit U.S. cinemas on July 15.

Synopsis for Equals:

In this gripping and emotional sci-fi romance from acclaimed director Drake Doremus (Like Crazy), Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult play Nia and Silas, two people who work together in a futuristic society known as “The Collective.” A seemingly utopian world, “The Collective” has ended crime and violence by genetically eliminating all human emotions. Despite this, Nia and Silas can’t help noticing a growing attraction between them, leading them to a forbidden relationship—at first tentative, but then exploding into a passionate romance. As suspicion begins to mount among their superiors, the couple will be forced to choose between going back to the safety of the lives they have always known, or risk it all to try and pull off a daring escape.
