Sony has dropped the first trailer for upcoming psychological thriller Escape Room.
The film tells of what unfolds after six strangers accept a challenge: take part in an immersive escape room challenge, escape, and win a million dollars. Of course, this ain’t no ordinary escape room like Lockdown Rooms San Diego. They better find the clues, fast, or die.
This Saw-esque thriller could be a good bit of fun, even if you’re kind of waiting for a tired Jigsaw to turn up wanting to “play a game”. It looks surprisingly creative, taking a well-worn ‘strangers in a deadly game’ concept and infusing it with tech and what appear to be a few big twists. Then again, it could be another eye-rolling entry in these types of flicks. Fingers crossed for the former.
This marks the third feature film from director Adam Robitel, who previously directed The Taking of Deborah Logan and Insidious: The Last Key. The screenplay comes from Maria Malnik (American Gods) and Bragi F. Schut (Season of the Witch).
Escape Room, starring Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Deborah Ann Woll, Jay Ellis, Tyler Labine, Nik Dodani and Yorick van Wageningen, will hit US cinemas on 4 January 2019. If you’re looking to get in the mood ahead of Escape Room’s release, you could always try out some escape room board games – fingers crossed they’re not as deadly.
