There’s a new Friday the 13th movie on the way, and this one could offer a new origin story of sorts for killer Jason Voorhees.

We sat down with producer Brad Fuller recently to discuss Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, but there’s no way we were going to let the opportunity to ask about this upcoming reboot pass us by. Luckily, Fuller offered up some enticing tidbits about why the new screenplay gave the project new life.

This Friday the 13th project has been circling a start for a few years now, and with a found-footage twist no less.

“There was a lot of found-footage scripts that they wanted us to make and I was not going to do that because I don’t think that can exist in Jason Voorhees’ world,” Fuller said.

While it may be easy to simply roll the eyes at an idea of yet another Friday the 13th film, this one could actually be worth developing. Attached to write the screenplay is Aaron Guzikowski, who earned himself wide acclaim for writing the 2013 Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal-starring thriller Prisoners. Guzikowski handed in a draft, Fuller and co. had a look at it, loved what they read and decided to start moving forward.

“Aaron’s story has great characters…You kind of have to understand Jason Voorhees, so we go back and we kind of started over and work our way forward.”

So, is this an origin story?

“Origin-ish, but it’s an origin that no one has seen before. Obviously Pamela’s there, but it’s a little bit different from what you’ve seen before.”

Pamela, as fans will know, is revealed to be the primary antagonist towards the end of the original 1980 Friday the 13th film. The former camp-cook reveals that her son, Jason, had drowned in Crystal Lake years earlier.

The new version will see Fuller producing alongside his Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay and Andrew Form. Guzikowski’s screenplay is reportedly still being worked on.

We’ll keep you informed.
