Tyler Rake has survived gunshots, explosions, prison riots and a plunge from a bridge. Now, he is officially back at work. Netflix has announced that filming is underway in New South Wales on Extraction 3, with Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani returning for another dangerously oversized mission. The first on-set image, above, shows Elba and Hemsworth flanking director Sam Hargrave before somebody inevitably starts throwing people through walls.
Extraction 3 Finally Brings the Franchise to New South Wales
Production has begun on the South Coast of NSW, with filming also set to take place around Sydney over the coming months.
The shoot is expected to create approximately 450 local jobs and contribute an estimated $127 million to the NSW screen industry and broader economy. It is being supported through the Australian Government’s Location Offset and the Made in NSW Fund via Screen NSW.

The third instalment completes a trip to NSW that the franchise was meant to make several years ago. Extraction 2 was supposed to begin filming in Sydney in September 2021, but COVID-related restrictions forced the production to relocate overseas. Principal photography instead began in Prague, with additional filming later taking place in Vienna, including around the Austrian capital’s Donau City district and DC Towers.
The original Extraction was filmed in Ahmedabad and Mumbai, India, before production moved to Ban Pong in Thailand.
Sam Hargrave Is Taking His “Biggest Swing Yet”
Hargrave returns after directing the first two films and helping give the series its identity: muscular stunt work, extended action sequences and a camera determined to follow Rake into every vehicle, building and near-death experience available.
The filmmaker is promising an even more ambitious escalation this time around.
“We’re very much looking forward to filming the third chapter in our Extraction saga here in New South Wales,” Hargrave said. “Our goal has always been to push the boundaries of action filmmaking, and with Extraction 3, we’re taking our biggest swing yet.”
That is a sizeable promise after Extraction 2 delivered a lengthy prison escape staged to resemble one continuous shot, followed by a train sequence that treated helicopters as disposable equipment.
David Weil, whose credits include Citadel and Tyrant, has written the screenplay. Hargrave is also producing alongside Hemsworth, Anthony Russo, Joe Russo and other returning members of the franchise’s creative team.

Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani Return
Netflix is keeping plot details under wraps, although Hemsworth will once again lead the film as black-ops mercenary Tyler Rake.
Farahani returns as Nik Khan, Rake’s trusted partner and one of the few people capable of keeping pace with him when an operation collapses into chaos. Elba is also back after making his franchise debut in Extraction 2 as the mysterious man who recruited Rake for another assignment on behalf of an unseen employer.
The sequel ended by opening the door to a larger mission involving Elba’s character, giving the third film a clear thread to pick up. Exactly where that assignment takes the team remains classified.
The Franchise Improved with Its Second Shot
The first Extraction became a major Netflix hit when it arrived in 2020, establishing Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake as a streaming-era action hero with a death wish and an unusually high tolerance for blunt-force trauma.
It earned a 67% critics’ score and a 71% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The response improved with Extraction 2, which climbed to 79% from critics and 83% from audiences.
Both films have appeared on Netflix’s Most Popular English Films list, making a third instalment an unsurprising prospect. The real question is how Hargrave intends to outdo a sequel that already included prison riots, moving trains, helicopters and enough shattered glass to keep several glaziers employed for years.
Netflix has not announced a release date for Extraction 3.
