Netflix Expands ‘Extraction’ Universe with Series Led by ‘Lupin’ Star Omar Sy

The Extraction franchise is expanding – albeit without Chris Hemsworth in the lead. Netflix has announced an eight-episode Extraction series set within the action-packed world of the hit films, with Omar Sy (Lupin, The Intouchables) in action this time around.

The show will introduce Sy as a mercenary navigating a perilous hostage rescue mission in Libya. “Trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers,” reads the official logline, “the series delves into the emotional struggles of conflicted and flawed characters, each facing trauma, betrayal, and life-or-death choices.”

Hemsworth played badass mercenary Tyler Rake in the previous two Extraction films, both produced by Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Endgame, The Gray Man) and directed by stunt coordinator/stuntman turned filmmaker Sam Hargrave. Both the Russos and Hargrave are on board the series as executive producers, alongside Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes, and Chris Castaldi for AGBO (the film and television production company led by the Russos).

Writer, showrunner, and executive producer of the series is Glen Mazzara, whose many television credits include The Walking Dead, The Shield, and The Rookie.

“I’m a very lucky man,” Mazzara said in a statement provided by Netflix site Tudum. “Omar is a huge talent. Joe, Anthony, and Angela have welcomed me into the AGBO family. The team at Netflix is truly the best I’ve ever worked with. Very lucky indeed.”

Angela Russo-Otstot, AGBO’s chief creative officer, highlighted the ambitions behind the expansion: “AGBO is grateful to collaborate once again with our partners at Netflix, this time to expand the Extraction universe into a new medium. We were inspired to tell more stories in this global franchise, further exploring heroic yet flawed mercenaries who illuminate universal themes. Glen Mazzara truly excels at sophisticated and nuanced explorations in the genre series space, and we are thrilled to have the exceptional talents of Omar Sy at the centre of our action-packed, multi-narrative mission.”

The Extraction universe is just one of several projects AGBO has developed for Netflix, alongside The Gray Man and the upcoming sci-fi film The Electric State, starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt.

For Sy, this marks another high-profile Netflix collaboration following his acclaimed lead role in Lupin, which has been one of the platform’s biggest non-English-language hits.
