American Gods, the highly acclaimed fantasy novel from author Neil Gaiman (creator of the popular Sandman comic), is heading to television. Deadline is reporting that the rights to the novel have been acquired by Freemantle Media North America, who also have an adaptation of hit French drama The Returned in development, with Rob Reiner attached, and the CW series The Tomorrow People, based on a Fremantle-owned format.
Amazon‘s synopsis for the novel is as follows:
Shadow is a man with a past. But now he wants nothing more than to live a quiet life with his wife and stay out of trouble. Until he learns that she’s been killed in a terrible accident.
Flying home for the funeral, as a violent storm rocks the plane, a strange man in the seat next to him introduces himself. The man calls himself Mr. Wednesday, and he knows more about Shadow than is possible.
He warns Shadow that a far bigger storm is coming. And from that moment on, nothing will ever he the same…
Shadow becomes Mr. Wednesday’s bodyguard and travelling partner, who is in reality, a god, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.
We haven’t read the novel, but this sounds brilliant, and it could make for riveting television. We’ll keep you informed on how this develops.
