Fast 8 has gathered itself one impressive cast over the months leading up to production, and now you can add Oscar winner Helen Mirren to the eighth film in Universal’s hugely successful franchise.
Mirren told Yahoo last year that it was her “great ambition” to be in a Fast & Furious pic, saying, “I so want to be a mad driver in a Fast and Furious movie. My claim to fame is I always do my own driving — I was on Top Gear, and I did [my lap] in a very good time. I keep putting it out there, and they never ask me. I’ll be in Fast and Furious 8. ”
And just like that, she’s in.
Speaking to Elle, the actress has confirmed that she will indeed have a role to play in Fast 8, which is currently in production. Mirren says she’s more than keen to make “serious” films, but is also after films like Fast 8 “for the fun of it.”
“It fits in very, very well with what I want to be doing. I want to be making film and theater, but film is particularly relevant. I like it to be serious. Of course, having said that I’m about to do Fast and Furious 8. But that’s for the fun of it. So maybe that’s what I want as well, some fun and some relevant, serious, important movies.”
We’ve seen Mirren show off her driving skills in Top Gear and in the RED franchise. So, will we see her behind the wheel here? Quite possibly.
“I’ve always rather loved driving. I said, ‘I’ll be in it, but only if I’m allowed to drive if I do drive in it.’ But we’ll see. We’ll see how it transpires.”
Fast 8, starring Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron, among many, many others, will be hitting Australia on April 13 and the U.S. on April 14, 2017.
Director F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) took to Instagram to confirm Mirren’s casting.
