The first official image of Elizabeth Banks as a Power Rangers villain has hit the net.
The upcoming big-screen adaptation of the hugely popular 90s television series will see Banks playing Rita Repulsa, the primary antagonist that has it out for our titular team of high school heroes.
Those that absolutely loved how the original Repulsa (played by Barbara Goodson, pictured above) looked may be taken aback by this new imagining, which is decidedly different from the character’s original style. Nevertheless, stepping away from the original series, at least in terms of design, is probably a good thing.
The Power Rangers TV show depicted Repulsa as a humanoid alien determined to take over the galaxy. After being defeated by Zorgon of Elter during an attempt to invade Earth, the evil sorceress was imprisoned in a space dumpster, which ended up on the moon. She got free, gathered up her minions and took back her headquarters, leading to another attempt to defeat Zordon, take Earth and occupy the planet for Lord Zedd. Her powers consist of mind control, teleportation, and the ability to make her monsters and minions grow to enormous sizes with the use of a magical staff.
“It’s definitely a modern and edgy re-imagining of the original Rita Repulsa,” Banks told People, the outlet that first unveiled the image above. She added: “We wanted to give her a backstory that connects her to the new Rangers.”
At the helm of the new Power Rangers movie is Dean Israelite, who broke out last year with his time-travel found-footage thriller Project Almanac. The lead cast includes Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger, Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger, RJ Cyler as the Blue Ranger, and Becky Gomez as the Yellow Ranger. You can check out the young heroes below.
The Lionsgate and Saban production is currently filming and is scheduled to open in the U.S. on March 24, 2017.
