‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ Trailer: Josh Hutcherson is Facing Evil Animatronics Again in Horror Sequel

They’re not just at Freddy’s anymore. The full-length official trailer for horror sequel Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is here, and it looks like Blumhouse is aiming for more blood, more lore, and a bigger body count. Watch the trailer above and read on for what we’re walking into this time around.

Fazbear’s is now local legend — but the nightmare isn’t over

Set one year after the events of the first film, the sequel finds the infamous Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza now mythologised by the community. What really happened has been distorted into something campy — and the town is throwing its first “Fazfest” to celebrate the story. But Mike (Josh Hutcherson), Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail), and Mike’s younger sister Abby (Piper Rubio) know the truth — and they’re keeping it from everyone, including Abby herself.

When Abby sneaks out to find her old animatronic friends — Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy — things spiral quickly. What follows is a new wave of terror that reveals disturbing secrets behind Freddy’s creation and awakens something buried for decades.

The first Five Nights at Freddy’s film opened to an impressive USD$80 million in October 2023 and went on to earn over USD$291 million worldwide — making it Blumhouse’s most successful release to date, surpassing the likes of Split and 2018’s Halloween.

Bigger scope, more animatronics, and higher stakes

According to what Hutcherson had to say in an October 2024 Esquire interview, fans can expect a significant step up. “It’s much bigger; the stakes are higher,” he said. “There’s more animatronics being brought in, different animatronics being brought in, and the world just opens up in a big way.”

He also added that while the film is expanding its scope, it’s not losing sight of what grounds it: “We’re finding the balance right now of building this world and expanding it in a really cool way but also making sure the characters stay really grounded.”

Hutcherson also teased a scarier tone, saying, “It’s gonna be scarier, too, actually.” And judging by the trailer — which wastes no time leaning into darker visuals, bloodied glimpses, and full-on chaos — that claim holds up.

The Fazbear family grows

Alongside returning cast members Hutcherson, Lail, Rubio, Matthew Lillard (as William Afton), and Theodus Crane, the sequel introduces new characters played by Freddy Carter, Mckenna Grace, Wayne Knight, and Scream’s Skeet Ulrich — making for a bit of a horror reunion.

Directed once again by Emma Tammi and written by series creator Scott Cawthon, the sequel is aiming to improve where the first film was critiqued. As producer Jason Blum said of the follow-up: “We took lots of criticism, saying it was not scary, lacked blood or strong scenes. We decided to implement all that in the sequel.”

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 opens in Australian cinemas on December 4 and in U.S. cinemas on December 5.
