Freddie Mercury Biopic Lives: ‘Theory of Everything’ Scribe Hired

It looked like that long-gestating Freddie Mercury biopic may never see the light of day, but GK Films is determined to get it on the road.

Deadline is reporting that the studio has hired Anthony McCarten, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter behind Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything, to pen the screenplay. The Queen and Rush scribe Peter Morgan wrote the project’s first draft.

The film is rumoured to be titled Bohemian Rhapsody, taken from the title of Queen’s classic hit, and is said to still have Ben Whishaw in GK Films’ sights to play Mercury. Whishaw, who can be seen playing Q in Bond film Spectre, began circling after Sacha Baron Cohen walked from the project due to creative differences with surviving Queen members.

GK Films is spearheading the potential biopic alongside Queen Films, while Sony Pictures continues to have the right to jump on board as well if they’re happy with McCarten’s screenplay.
