‘Free Guy’ Trailer: Ryan Reynolds Lives in Taika Waititi’s Video Game

Ryan Reynolds is back as a superhero; only this time he’s a video game background character…

The trailer has arrived for Free Guy, an upcoming action sci-fi film that has Reynolds playing a guy who discovers he’s a background player in an open-world video game. So, he decides to change things up, and become the hero of his own story.

Taika Waiti also stars in this film, marking a bit of a (*shudder*) Green Lantern reunion. Thankfully, this looks like a lot of fun, with Reynolds sticking to his Reynolds brand in a film that appears to have that Deadpool-esque tongue-in-cheek self awareness and cartoony violence. It’s a concept that could allow for all manner of craziness; looking forward to seeing where they take it. And yeah, Fortnite fans should have plenty of nods to look out for.

Free Guy, directed by Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Night at the Museum, Real Steel), will open in Australian cinemas on July 2 and hits the US on July 3, 2020.

In “Free Guy,” a bank teller who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game, decides to become the hero of his own story…one he rewrites himself. Now in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way…before it is too late.
