‘Heart of Stone’: Gal Gadot to Star in ‘Mission: Impossible’-Style Franchise Starter

Warner Bros.

If things go according to plan here, Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot could have yet another movie franchise.

Gadot has singed up to star in potential franchise starter Heart of Stone, an international spy thriller from Skydance Media. There aren’t any plot details to go on right now, although news-breaker outlet Deadline is reporting that it’s poised to “put a female spin on action franchises like Mission: Impossible and 007.”

In talks to direct the film is Tom Harper, whose credits include Amazon Prime-released The Aeronauts (2019), drama Wild Rose (2018) and acclaimed mini-series War & Peace (2016). If he does sign on, he’ll be working from a screenplay by Greg Rucka, who wrote Netflix’s The Old Guard and the graphic novel series it was based on, and Allison Schroeder, who earned an Oscar nomination for co-writing 2016’s Hidden Figures.

As for Heart of Stone‘s release format, Skydance is reportedly looking to keep its options open for either theatrical or streaming, or perhaps both. As the pandemic has dragged on, studios have been more willing to forego a theatrical release or go with a simultaneous drop – Wonder Woman 1984 is doing the latter.

It’s yet another big get for Gadot, who will also be producing Heart of Stone and is now shooting to the ultra-high pay bracket with a deal that Deadline reports to be in the eight figures. Gadot has a number of high-profile projects on the horizon, including Wonder Woman 1984; Netflix’s Red Notice, with Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds; Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express sequel Death on the Nile; and the planned period epic Cleopatra.
