The axe is changing hands before Prime Video’s God of War has even reached the screen. In a deeply unfortunate turn of events, Ryan Hurst is being replaced as Kratos after suffering a serious injury while performing a stunt on the Vancouver set.
The setback is especially cruel for the actor, who had spent months preparing for the physically punishing role and added around 40 pounds of muscle. Hurst tore his bicep in late June, underwent surgery and is now facing what could be an extensive rehabilitation.
Deadline broke the news, reporting that Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios ultimately determined that the production could not remain suspended for the time Hurst would need to safely return. His recovery remains a priority, but the studios are now searching for another actor to lead the high-profile PlayStation adaptation.

Production was stopped immediately after the accident and the series remains on hiatus. TMZ first reported the on-set injury.
How long Hurst’s recovery will take remains unclear. Deadline reports that a severe bicep tear can require four to six months of rehabilitation, with a return to full strength potentially taking considerably longer. Given the sheer physical demands of Kratos, Hurst was unlikely to be ready to resume filming until sometime in 2027, leaving the production facing an untenable delay.
The consequences are substantial. Four episodes had reportedly been completed before filming was halted, and all four are now expected to be reshot once a new Kratos is found. With child actor Callum Vinson playing Atreus, the production also faces additional time pressure, as his appearance could noticeably change during a prolonged break.
Preparations are expected to resume in mid-August, ahead of a proposed return to filming in mid-October.
Hurst’s Time as Kratos Ends Before Audiences See It
This was not an actor injured days after arriving on set. Hurst had committed months to a role designed to launch a multi-year fantasy epic, with his completed work now set to be reshot without him.
Hurst was announced as Prime Video’s Kratos in January, bringing an existing connection to the franchise with him. He previously voiced and performed motion capture for Thor in the 2022 video game God of War Ragnarök.
The news also arrives as the actor appears in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, playing Mentor, a friend and trainer to Tom Holland’s Telemachus.
What the Recasting Means for God of War
Prime Video has already handed God of War a two-season order, with both seasons intended to film back-to-back. That plan reportedly remains in place despite the delay and the loss of its central star.
The series comes from writer, executive producer and showrunner Ronald D. Moore, whose credits include Battlestar Galactica, Outlander and For All Mankind. Frederick E.O. Toye directed the first two episodes.
Drawing from the story introduced in the acclaimed 2018 game, the adaptation follows Kratos and his young son, Atreus, as they journey to scatter the ashes of Faye, their wife and mother. Their mission carries them across the Norse realms and into conflict with the gods of Asgard, while forcing the emotionally guarded Kratos to confront the responsibilities of fatherhood.
Vinson remains attached as Atreus. The wider cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri and Danny Woodburn as Brok.
No replacement for Hurst has been announced. Prime Video will eventually have its new Kratos, but an enormous opportunity has ended for the actor through circumstances entirely beyond his control.
