Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the next film in the unfolding MonsterVerse that so far includes Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla and Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island.
As we saw at the end of Godzilla, the big titular lizard has got our back, and thank goodness for that, because humanity’s going to need all the help it can get when an array of new massive creatures arise. Meet Mothra, Rodan, and Godzilla’s ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah.
While the first film was solid and had some great moments, it arguably spent too much time juicing its teases of Godzilla and wasted Bryan Cranston. Kong: Skull Island was, in this writer’s opinion, a good bit of monster fun, a film that embraced its B-grade elements and offered up some slick creature mayhem. So far, this looks to potentially be a balance of the two, going the moody, oh-so night time route while not shying away from giving us the monster action we’re after. Fingers firmly crossed for this one. Don’t forget: Godzilla vs. Kong arrives in 2020.
Directing here is Michael Dougherty, whose previous credits include horror films Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus. Dougherty co-wrote the screenplay with Zach Shields, who he worked with on Krampus.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters, starring Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Sally Hawkins, Charles Dance, Thomas Middleditch, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Ken Watanabe, and Zhang Ziyi, will be hitting Australian cinemas on May 30 and US cinemas on May 31, 2019.
Official synopsis for Godzilla: King of the Monsters:
Following the global success of “Godzilla” and “Kong: Skull Island” comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse, an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history. The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
