Director Chosen for ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’

Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. have chosen who they want at the helm of their ambitious Godzilla vs. Kong movie.

Making his way from relatively small-budget horror films such as You’re Next and last year’s Blair Witch, as well as the thriller The Guest, Adam Wingard has been chosen to direct the monster showdown that will pit two of cinema’s biggest creatures against each other. THR broke the news.

The screenplay was crafted in a writers room led by Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean franchise). Also in the writers room are Star Trek Beyond scribes Patrick McKay & J.D. Payne, T.S. Nowlin (Maze Runner franchise), Jack Paglen (Transcendence), Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski, Lindsey Beer and Cat Vasko.

Godzilla vs. Kong, scheduled for U.S. release on May 22, 2020, will be a big chapter in the monster universe that began with 2014’s Godzilla, which earned $US529 million worldwide. Kong: Skull Island was released to a relatively positive reception, earning $US565.5 million in worldwide box office receipts.

Up next in the franchise is Godzilla: King of the Monsters, starring Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown. The sequel is lined up for release in the U.S. on March 22, 2019.

Before we see what Wingard does at the helm of Godzilla vs. Kong, we’ll see whether he can adapt a beloved manga with Death Note, hitting Netflix on August 25.
