The 83rd Golden Globe nominations are in, and the 2026 line-up makes it clear the Globes are still keen on reinvention. Spread across 28 categories – including a freshly minted Best Podcast race – this year’s ballot mixes prestige dramas, oddball comedies, franchise juggernauts and a few delightfully left-field choices jostling for space ahead of the January 11 ceremony.

Film races: auteurs, franchises and a Neon glow

On the film side, voters have leaned hard into the director-driven end of the spectrum. One Battle After Another leads the field as a full-package contender, landing recognition for Paul Thomas Anderson, a star-stacked ensemble and the film itself. Close behind, Joachim Trier’s Norwegian drama Sentimental Value turns intimate family turmoil into major awards momentum, while Neon cements its status as a power player with a slate that runs through the drama, comedy, international and animation categories. At the same time, titles like Ryan Coogler’s vampire saga Sinners, Guillermo del Toro’s reimagined Frankenstein and Chloé Zhao’s literary adaptation Hamnet give the drama field a distinctly auteur-heavy flavour.

Of course, it wouldn’t be the Globes without some big-ticket spectacle muscling into the conversation. The Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and animated categories keep the door open for large-scale crowd-pleasers, with films such as Avatar: Fire and Ash, Wicked: For Good, KPop Demon Hunters, F1 and Zootopia 2 making sure that franchise fandoms still have plenty to cheer about. Between the original song and score line-ups, the music branches also deliver a few narrative hooks of their own, from Nick Cave stepping into the awards fray with a title track for Train Dreams to heavyweights like Hans Zimmer, Max Richter and Jonny Greenwood returning to the Globes spotlight.

Television, new categories and the “new” Globes

Television remains a crowded battleground defined by familiar faces and fresh arrivals. Returning heavy-hitters such as The White Lotus, Severance, Slow Horses and The Bear continue their awards-era dominance, while newer titles including The Pitt, Pluribus, Nobody Wants This and Adolescence elbow their way onto the ballot and complicate any easy predictions. Limited and anthology projects are once again largely owned by the streamers, with Black Mirror, The Beast in Me, Dying for Sex and The Girlfriend all staking out space in one of the season’s most competitive lanes.

Beyond the traditional film and TV contests, the Globes’ ongoing makeover is most obvious in the newer categories. A standalone stand-up comedy award and the debuting Best Podcast trophy nod to where audiences are actually spending their time – headphones on, screens off – and give the show another talking point as it tries to move further away from its scandal-heavy past. With campaigning now kicking into high gear and a voting body that’s larger and more diverse than the old HFPA days, this year’s nominations feel like another step in the Globes’ attempt to prove it can still throw a party the industry is happy to turn up for.
