The trailer for Government Cheese, a surreal Apple TV+ crime-comedy series starring and executive produced by David Oyelowo, has dropped. Take a look above and learn more below.
Set in 1969’s San Fernando Valley, the ten-episode series has Oyelowo playing Hampton Chambers, a man fresh out of prison who expects to reunite seamlessly with his wife Astoria (Simone Missick) and sons Einstein (Evan Ellison) and Harrison (Jahi Di’Allo Winston). Instead, he finds a family that has adapted in his absence—leaving him scrambling to reclaim his place.

“While I was away, I came up with a plan that’s gonna make our family the toast of Chatsworth,” Hampton proclaims in the trailer, introducing a peculiar invention—a drill that sharpens as it works. But family dynamics aren’t his only hurdle; he also owes money to local gangsters. As the tagline warns, “A second chance is never simple.”
“I describe it as a parabolic, surrealist, absurdist family comedy, because it’s the only way I can quantify it,” Oyelowo said in a sit-down with Variety, “I describe it as a parabolic, surrealist, absurdist family comedy, because it’s the only way I can quantify it. I hadn’t seen that before.”
The series was co-created by Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr, with Hunter drawing from his own upbringing. “My dad was incarcerated, but whenever we would see him, he had all these ideas of how he was going to do these different things,” he said in the same Variety interview. “He was very optimistic and very creative.”
The ensemble cast also includes Jean-Michel Richaud, London Garcia, Djilali Rez-Kallah, Bokeem Woodbine, Jeremy Bobb, Louis Cancelmi, Julien Heron, Djilali Rez-Kallah, Louis Ferreira, Thomas Beaudoin, Kyle Mac with John Ortiz and Adam Beach.
Government Cheese, a ten-episode series, will kick off with a four-episode drop on Apple TV+ on April 16th, followed by weekly instalments through May 28.
