20th Century Fox has dropped the trailer for The Greatest Showman, the upcoming original musical led by one of the great showmen, Hugh Jackman.
Seriously, who else could take on this role? Jackman plays American showman P.T. Barnum in this musical “inspired by the ambition and imagination” by the man, known for promoting celebrated hoaxes and founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus, among many, many other things, in the 1800s.
As you can see in the first trailer below, The Greatest Showman is aiming to be a grand, colourful musical that calls back the MGM films of long ago. The visuals have that glossy, dreamlike look going on, and there’s a heightened type of reality that brings to mind Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge, which also had an Aussie in the lead.
Speaking of Aussies, this is the feature directorial debut for Australian filmmaker Michael Gracey, whose credits include visual effects work on 2003’s Ned Kelly. There’s plenty of talent behind the scenes. The screenplay comes from Jenny Bicks (Sex and the City, Rio 2) and Oscar winner Bill Condon – the latter of which directed Disney’s hit live-action musical Beauty and the Beast – and the film’s songs have been crafted by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who won Oscars for their work on Damien Chazelle’s La La Land. It’s clearly a big project; fingers crossed.
The Greatest Showman, also starring Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya, will open in the U.S. on December 25 and arrives Down Under on December 26.
