‘Gremlins’ Animated Prequel Series On the Way

Warner Bros.

An animated Gremlins prequel series, set years before the 1984 live-action original, is on the way to the in-the-works WarnerMedia streaming service.

The company has officially announced that a half-hour prequel series titled Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai has been ordered. There will be 10 episodes in the first season.

The plot will take place in 1920s Shanghai and will be following 10-year-old Sam Wing (he’s the shop owner, Mr. Wing, in the 1984 movie). We’ll see how he met the young Mogwai called Gizmo and how they, along with a teen street thief named Elle, went on a question to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure. Their perilous journey through the Chinese countryside finds them encountering, and sometimes battling, colourful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore.

Gotham writer and co-producer Tze Chun will pen the series and will co executive producer with Brendan Hay (Dawn of the Croods, Robot Chicken).
