Fresh off a blood-soaked box office run, Hailee Steinfeld is switching gears. The Sinners star has signed on for a very different kind of challenge — the romantic comedy Winter Games, set in the high-stakes world of the Winter Olympics.
She’ll be starring opposite Top Gun: Maverick and Whiplash actor Miles Teller, with Paul Downs Colaizzo (known for Brittany Runs a Marathon) directing from a script he co-wrote with Pat Cunnane. Paramount Pictures is behind the project, which centres on two athletes brought together by pressure, personal baggage, and a shot at redemption.
More on Screen Realm:
As first reported by Deadline, Winter Games follows a perpetually overlooked skier (played by Steinfeld) and a self-sabotaging hockey legend (Teller) who cross paths at a make-or-break moment in their respective careers. As romance blooms in the Olympic Village, so too do complications — threatening her medal dreams and his last shot at a comeback.
Steinfeld’s next chapter after record-breaking horror success
Winter Games marks Steinfeld’s first big-screen role following Sinners, Ryan Coogler’s original horror hit in which she starred opposite Michael B. Jordan. The supernatural thriller surpassed expectations with a US$365 million global haul — including a jaw-dropping $278 million domestic — making it the highest-grossing original film of the past 15 years and the fifth-biggest horror movie of all time. It also marked her musical return, with the soundtrack single Dangerous racking up over 4.7 million Spotify streams in its first month.
The film continues to generate early awards buzz and opened the floodgates to new opportunities for Steinfeld. Winter Games was ultimately her pick for a follow-up.
An Olympic rom-com with awards-friendly heat
The new film comes as Teller continues his busy stretch, which includes A24 drama Eternity and upcoming crime pic Paper Tiger from director James Gray. He’s also producing Winter Games alongside Tim and Trevor White for Star Thrower Entertainment.
No release date has been announced, but with production expected to begin later this year, Winter Games could be opening cinemas sometime in 2027.
