HBO is giving us a much bigger taste of its return to Hogwarts. The second official teaser trailer for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has arrived, packing in the Sorting Ceremony, Quidditch, Wizard’s Chess, the Invisibility Cloak, the Mirror of Erised and plenty more from Harry’s first year. HBO may still be calling this a teaser, but at more than two and a half minutes, there’s a lot to dig through. Dominic McLaughlin’s Harry Potter is front and centre as Hogwarts properly opens its doors, with Arabella Stanton’s Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout’s Ron Weasley joining him for a much fuller look at the young trio.

Hogwarts Is Properly in Session

The trailer kicks off with Professor McGonagall (Janet McTeer) welcoming the first-year students into the Great Hall for the Sorting Ceremony. We get Harry beneath the Sorting Hat, John Lithgow’s Albus Dumbledore watching from the head table and the Gryffindor students erupting when Harry joins their house.

From there, the footage moves quickly through some very familiar pieces of Philosopher’s Stone. There’s food magically appearing across the Great Hall tables, lessons in progress, the trio exploring Hogwarts and Harry taking to the Quidditch pitch. Ron gets a go at Wizard’s Chess, Harry slips beneath his father’s Invisibility Cloak and the Mirror of Erised makes an appearance, showing Harry the parents he never had the chance to know.

And, yes, there’s trouble. A dungeon troll is glimpsed stomping through Hogwarts, Luke Thallon’s Professor Quirrell gets some screen time and Paapa Essiedu’s Severus Snape is once again making it abundantly clear that Harry isn’t going to have the easiest time in his classroom.

The new footage also gives us considerably more of the adult cast. Lithgow’s Dumbledore has a larger presence, McTeer’s McGonagall oversees the students’ arrival, and Nick Frost’s Rubeus Hagrid continues to serve as Harry’s welcoming hand into the Wizarding World.

Harry’s First Year Gets Eight Episodes

The eight-episode season adapts J.K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter book, beginning with Harry’s unhappy life with the Dursleys before a Hogwarts acceptance letter opens the door to a world he never knew existed. “There is nothing special about Harry Potter,” Aunt Petunia insists. Hogwarts, of course, has other ideas.

Harry soon discovers magic, friendship and a past his relatives have spent years hiding from him, while the mysteries waiting inside the school eventually put him on a collision course with the darkest wizard of all.

Alongside McLaughlin, Stanton and Stout, the ensemble includes Lithgow as Dumbledore, McTeer as McGonagall, Essiedu as Snape, Frost as Hagrid, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Warwick Davis as Filius Flitwick, Sirine Saba as Pomona Sprout, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch and Thallon as Quirrell.

Also appearing are Daniel Rigby and Bel Powley as Vernon and Petunia Dursley, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, Louise Brealey as Rolanda Hooch and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander.

HBO Is Already Looking Beyond Year One

HBO has already ordered a second season adapting Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, part of the wider plan to work through Rowling’s seven-book series across multiple seasons.

Francesca Gardiner (Succession, Killing Eve) serves as writer, showrunner and executive producer, while Succession director Mark Mylod is executive producing and directing multiple episodes. Rowling executive produces alongside Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV and longtime Harry Potter film producer David Heyman.

The HBO Original series Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will debut Christmas 2026, only on HBO Max.
