John Hawkes and Michael Cera are set to star in How and Why, FX Network’s half-hour comedy pilot from Oscar-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (AdaptationEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).

Hawkes is to play Goodman Hesselman, a man who is able to tell you the ins and outs of a nuclear reactor but who can’t figure out anything to do with life. After Hesselman loses his job hosting a children’s science show called How and Why, he finds a new job in a small TV market in the middle of nowhere. There, Hesselman ends up having experiences with the supernatural world. Cera will be playing Mendelson, Hesselman’s new boss at the television studio. Mendelson is determined to replicate How and Why as much as is legally possible.

Negotiations between Hawkes, Cera and FX went on for quite some time, and it thankfully ended up with a green-light. Kaufman has penned the screenplay and will be directing the pilot episode. He’s also attached as executive producer with Anthony Bregman (Thumbsucker, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotlight Mind).
