Dwayne Johnson is set to appear on our small screens, full time. THR is reporting that HBO has officially ordered to series Ballers, a half-hour comedy-drama.
Ballers will be set around “the lives of a group of former and current football players.” Johnson will lead the cast, which includes Omar Benson Miller, John David Washington, Rob Corddry, Troy Garity, Donovan Carter, Jazmyn Simon, Taylor Cole and LeToya Luckett.
Peter Berg, the director of Lone Survivor, is attached as a producer and is to helm the pilot episode. The series comes from writer and executive producer Stephen Levinson (TV’s Entourage and last year’s drama Prisoners). Johnson, Mark Wahlberg, Hiram Garcia, and Evan Reilly are all producing. Ballers continues HBO’s collaboration with Levinson and Wahlberg, whose credits also include HBO vehicles Boardwalk Empire, How to Make It in America and In Treatment.
Johnson is quite a force in the cinematic medium, sparking franchises and proving to be box-office gold. HBO is no doubt looking to bring some of that magic as they try to deliver a hit-comedy series. The network has definitely aced it in the adult-drama department, with shows like True Blood, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones and True Detective, but could this be the comedy series they’ve been searching for?
