The first trailer has arrived for Heads of State, Prime Video’s upcoming action-comedy that has John Cena and Idris Elba playing the U.S. President and U.K. Prime Minster, respectively. Trailer above and info below.
Cena plays Will Derringer, the U.S. President and a former Hollywood action star who definitely leans more showbiz than statesman. Elba is Sam Clarke, the no-nonsense UK Prime Minister with a deep dislike for his American counterpart. Their public rivalry isn’t great for international diplomacy, but it takes a backseat when their joint flight is hit mid-air, sending the leaders into survival mode.
What follows is a chaotic global run-in with a ruthless adversary, high-tech espionage, plenty of explosions, and yes — a reluctant bromance. Along the way, they team up with MI6 agent Noel Bisset (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), a one-woman army who turns up with guns blazing. “Hey, where’s your backup?” asks Derringer. “There is no backup,” she responds, cooly triggering an explosive. Jack Quaid, Paddy Considine, Stephen Root, Carla Gugino, and Sarah Niles round out the supporting cast.

The film is directed by Ilya Naishuller, whose feature credits include Bob Odenkirk action-comedy Nobody and POV actioner Hardcore Henry. The script comes from Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec, and Harrison Query, from a story by Query.
It’s a reunion for Cena and Elba, who previously shared the screen in The Suicide Squad. The duo look to be flexing both action chops and comic timing in this slick-looking flick — and judging from the trailer, they’re having a blast. Let’s hope viewers have a blast too.
Heads of State hits Prime Video globally on July 2.
