New ‘His Dark Materials’ Trailer Shows Off HBO’s Next Epic Series

The Comic-Con trailer for upcoming series His Dark Materials has been released online.

This BBC One and HBO adaptation of Philip Pullman’s book trilogy of the same name looks like grand production. The first season’s plot Lyra (played by Logan breakout Dafne Keen), a brave young woman from another world who is searching for a kidnapped friend. Her journey leads to a plot involving other stolen kids, as well as a phenomenon called Dust. As the trailer also shows, the cast also includes James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda, and yes, there’s an armored polar bear.

We’re a long way from The Golden Compass, the 2007 film that was supposed to kick off a film series adaptation of Pullman’s works. High hopes for what’s in store here.

His Dark Materials, written by Jack Thorne (Wonder, upcoming Enora Holmes), will begin on HBO on later this year.

Official synopsis for His Dark Materials:

His Dark Materials stars Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Adapting Philip Pullman’s award-winning trilogy of the same name, which is considered a modern masterpiece of imaginative fiction, the first season follows Lyra, a seemingly ordinary but brave young woman from another world. Her search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children, and becomes a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. As she journeys through the worlds, including our own, Lyra meets Will, a determined and courageous boy. Together, they encounter extraordinary beings and dangerous secrets, with the fate of both the living — and the dead — in their hands.
