The official trailer for Holy Days has arrived, teasing a heartfelt dramedy starring Judy Davis, Miriam Margolyes and Jacki Weaver as three nuns on a road trip through New Zealand’s breathtaking South Island. Watch the trailer above, then read on for the info.
An unlikely road trip takes shape
The feature directorial debut from Nat Boltt, Holy Days centres on Brian, a grieving 10-year-old boy played by newcomer Elijah Tamati, who finds refuge in a crumbling convent run by three eccentric nuns. When Brian overhears plans to shut the convent down, he sets off a last-ditch plan to save it, convincing the sisters to hit the road in search of a former nun-turned-lawyer who might be able to help.

The trailer sets up a journey that’s part comic misadventure, part emotional reckoning. As the group travels through snow-dusted highways and remote mountain passes, it becomes clear that Brian has his own deeply personal goal: reaching the peak of Mt Cook, where he believes he can reunite with his late mother before she crosses into the spirit world.
Faith, family and finding your way
Adapted from the novel by Dame Joy Cowley, Holy Days was filmed entirely in New Zealand and produced as an international co-production with Canada.
“I’m so proud of Holy Days and the incredible people and partnerships that have made this wildly delightful film possible,” Boltt, who also has a role in the film, said in a statement when the project was announced. “Like Little Miss Sunshine, this story brings together an unlikely group of friends and sets them on an unexpected journey of discovery, where they may not get what they want but they sure get what they need!”
Holy Days opens in New Zealand cinemas on February 26, with an Australian release date yet to be confirmed.
