Christian Bale could be on the awards path with Hostiles, an upcoming western that reunites him with Out of the Furnace director Scott Cooper.

The film is set in 1892 and follows an Army Captain (Bale) who reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief (Wes Studi) and his family to tribal lands. Rosumand Pike plays a young widow they meet on the perilous journey.

No question: This looks fantastic. Early reactions suggest Bale puts in a very strong performance with this one, and as the trailer shows, director Cooper – whose credits include Crazy Heart and Black Mass – appears to be on point as well. Special mention must go to cinematographer Masanobu Takayanagi (Warrior, The Grey, Spotlight), who could find himself up for a few nods come awards season.

The buzz has kicked off strong thanks to the film’s reception its Telluride Film Festival premiere. And with the movie hitting the Toronto International Film Festival next week, it’s just a matter of time until worldwide distribution rights are locked in.
