Every decision has led to devastation. HBO has released the trailer for the House of the Dragon season 3 finale, teasing the long-awaited clash at Tumbleton as Daemon takes Caraxes to war and Rhaenyra’s hold over the realm continues to crack. Watch the trailer above and read on for what to know.

The Battle of Tumbleton Has Arrived
The preview opens with Addam of Hull warning his brother Alyn that news of Aegon’s survival has placed Rhaenyra on a “dark path”. The increasingly volatile queen is shown gripping Baela’s face as unrest grows around her and the victory she thought she had secured begins slipping away.
The centrepiece, however, is Tumbleton. Matt Smith’s Daemon has reunited with the Riverlands army, including Roderick “Roddy the Ruin” Dustin and Oscar Tully, and appears ready to lead the charge against Lord Ormund Hightower’s forces. Caraxes can be seen descending towards the battlefield as soldiers brace for a confrontation that promises plenty of dragonfire.
Ormund, played by James Norton, is hardly waiting around to be overwhelmed. Daeron tells Gwayne Hightower that his uncle has a plan he has not shared with anyone, while Ormund’s attempt to turn Ulf the White against Rhaenyra hangs heavily over the coming battle.
Episode 7 saw Ormund offer Ulf the Driftwood Throne and the title of Lord of the Tides in exchange for his allegiance. With the dragonrider already resentful of how he has been treated by Rhaenyra and Daemon, the queen’s apparent advantage in the skies may be far less secure than it appears.
Aegon and Sunfyre Change the Board
Rhaenyra’s growing desperation follows the surprise return of Tom Glynn-Carney’s Aegon and his dragon Sunfyre. Sunfyre had been presumed dead after the Battle of Rook’s Rest, where both dragon and rider suffered catastrophic injuries. Episode 7 revealed that the badly scarred creature had survived, emerging from the woods to defend Aegon from Rhaenyra’s soldiers.
The news is now spreading across Westeros, strengthening Aegon’s claim and undermining the authority of Emma D’Arcy’s Rhaenyra just as she prepares for another major battle.
The trailer also returns to Harrenhal, where Aemond is shown alive after collapsing from the poison administered by Alicent. With Alys Rivers still beside him and Vhagar unaccounted for, another powerful dragonrider may be preparing to re-enter the war.
Fire & Blood Readers Know Tumbleton Matters
The First Battle of Tumbleton marks a significant turning point in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, although the HBO adaptation has moved characters and altered the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
Episode 7 director Nina Lopez-Corrado offered a pointed tease while discussing the finale with Entertainment Weekly: “I do think you should start refreshing your memories for the Battle of Tumbleton.”
Lopez-Corrado acknowledged that the series has deviated from Martin’s account, explaining that some of the changes introduced in episode 7 will carry directly into the finale.
“We do deviate just a little bit in episode 7 from what’s originally in the books and, personally, from a character standpoint, what Ryan [Condal, showrunner] and the writers did in terms of that really helped evolve the character storylines from what were in the books,” she said.
“I know that’s a very controversial thing to say for diehards, but I think some of the storylines that you’re gonna see in 7 that’ll carry on into 8 were really executed strongly by the writers and also by the actors.”
Season 3 Finale Release Date
Based on Martin’s Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and chronicles the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.
Although season 3 is drawing to a close, one season still remains. The fourth and final season will bring the series to an end, although fans will need to be patient: HBO is expected to release it in 2028.
The House of the Dragon season 3 finale premieres Sunday, August 9 at 9pm ET/6pm PT on HBO and HBO Max in the US. It streams in Australia on HBO Max from Monday, August 10.
