The dragons are circling once more. HBO has unveiled the official teaser trailer for House of the Dragon season 3, and Westeros is officially tipping into open war. Watch the trailer above, then read on for what’s coming as the Dance of the Dragons erupts in full.
The War Ignites at Full Flame
Season 2 left the realm in a fragile, blood-soaked stalemate. Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) made a desperate overture to hand over King’s Landing, while Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) fled the capital with Larys Strong (Matthew Needham). In his absence, Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) has taken an increasingly firm grip on the Iron Throne.

The teaser wastes little time reminding us what’s at stake. “You are the Queen of Dragons,” Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) tells Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy). “You have an absolute power within your grasp.” Rhaenyra may have dragons, but absolute power in Westeros has never come without consequence.
There are flashes of battle councils, burning coastlines, and dragonfire tearing through ships at sea. Jace (Harry Collett) is seen riding into conflict, signalling that the younger generation of Targaryens will not be spared the horrors to come. If the first two seasons were about positioning pieces on the board, this looks like the moment the board is flipped.
The Battle of the Gullet Finally Arrives
Season 3 is set to adapt the Battle of the Gullet from George R. R. Martin’s Fire and Blood, widely regarded as one of the most devastating naval clashes in Targaryen history. The teaser offers brief but brutal glimpses of what appears to be that confrontation: ships engulfed in flame, dragons swooping low over open water, and chaos on every deck.
Showrunner Ryan Condal previously told Entertainment Weekly, “In many ways, the Gullet has been on the minds of the production for about three years now, and trying to figure out how we were going to mount it in a way that was both producible and exciting, thrilling.” He added, “The planning that has gone into this…basically all departments working in concert to really make a thing that nobody has ever done before.”
He has also teased the broader tone of the season, saying, “I will say that the war this season goes very hot, very, very quickly. I think the people that were waiting and waiting for all of the horrible, brutal, pitiless bloodshed will be getting it in copious amounts.” Based on this teaser, that promise appears very literal.
Tensions Behind the Throne
The trailer arrives amid ongoing conversation within the fandom about creative differences between Martin and Condal. Earlier reports detailed friction over the direction of the adaptation, with Martin describing an “abysmal” period in their working relationship. The author and series executive producer told The Hollywood Reporter: “I hired Ryan. I thought Ryan and I were partners. And we were all through the first season. I would read early drafts of the scripts. I would give notes. He would change some things. It was working really well — I thought. Then we got into season two, and he basically stopped listening to me.”
Condal also addressed the situation, telling Entertainment Weekly, “I will simply say, I made every effort to include George in the adaptation process. I really did. Over years and years. And we really enjoyed a mutually fruitful, I thought, really strong collaboration for a long time. But at some point, as we got deeper down the road, he just became unwilling to acknowledge the practical issues at hand in a reasonable way.”
He has also expressed hope that they might “rediscover that harmony someday.”
Regardless of the behind-the-scenes disagreements, season 3 is on the way, promising fans an explosive new chapter. Even the tagline on the season’s first poster, featuring Queen Rhaenyra, reads, “From Fire Comes Darkness.”
