The feature debut for director Grant Sputore, I Am Mother tells the story of a girl who is the first human to be raised after the extinction of humankind. She’s being mothered by a robot, whose true intentions are put into question on the arrival of an injured stranger (Hilary Swank).
This looks intriguing. The trailer below is slickly crafted, laying the plot down nicely and unveiling a familiar sci-fi plot that places tech in a not-so-promising light. Up and comer Clara Rugaard could have a star-making turn as the girl caught in the middle, and Byrne sounds on-point as the potentially conniving bot. The film received a somewhat mixed response out of Sundance, but it could prove to be a nice surprise.
I Am Mother hits Netflix on June 6.
