Sony has dropped a new trailer for I Know What You Did Last Summer, offering a bigger look at the slasher horror franchise’s latest chapter — one that brings a new generation of victims and sees the return of two familiar faces.
The reboot follows five friends who, after causing a deadly car accident, decide to cover up the crime and swear each other to secrecy. But one year later, the secret is no longer theirs to keep. A masked, hook-carrying killer begins stalking them, determined to avenge the past. As the body count rises, the group learns that their nightmare is far from unique — and they turn to two survivors of the 1997 Southport Massacre for help: Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt, reprising their roles as Ray and Julie. The trailer shows Hewitt even delivering her iconic line from the 1997 original: “What are you waiting for?”
More on Screen Realm:
The cast features Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, Sarah Pidgeon, Billy Campbell, Gabbriette Bechtel, and Austin Nichols.
“As a female in Hollywood, in your 40s sometimes you can feel forgotten about,” Hewitt said in an April interview with People. “I was really touched emotionally and honored that Sony would have me back, that the franchise would have me back, that Jen wanted me back and that the audience wanted me back. It really felt like an honor. Stepping into her shoes again was really fun.”
Hewitt also promised “lots of twists and turns,” saying, “I don’t think people are going to expect anything that’s coming. It’s a really fun ride.” Added director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who helms the new film following her work on Netflix’s Do Revenge, “We approached it like super fans, so I think people are going to be really happy. All the things that you want to see in this movie, you’re going to see in this movie.”
This marks the fourth film in the franchise. After the first film’s success in ’97, the studio quickly embarked on a sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, released the following year. A stand-alone follow-up, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, was given a straight-to-video release in 2006. Amazon Studios tried there hand at an I Know What You Did Last Summer series in 2021, with James Wan among the executive producers. The series was short-lived, cancelled three months after its debut.
I Know What You Did Last Summer opens in Australian cinemas on July 17 and in U.S. theatres on July 18.
