It was just a matter of time before I Saw the Devil received an English-language remake. The hard-hitting South Korean-thriller was, simply put: brilliant.
The Wrap is reporting that Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett, director and writer of You’re Next and the upcoming thriller The Guest, have been tasked with tackling the remake. The deal has apparently been on the table for a while now, with Barrett reportedly already working on the film’s screenplay and director Wingard already meeting with actors.
The original film told the story of a secret agent, played by Byung-hun Lee (A Bittersweet Life, G.I. Joe), who begins a game of cat-and-mouse with the serial killer (Oldboy‘s Min-sik Choi) who murdered his pregnant fiancé. Violent and grim, sometimes to the extreme, I Saw the Devil is a character-driven thriller that ponders, at what point does the person hunting the savage become just that themselves?
Keith Calder and Jessica Calder will produce the I Saw the Devil remake under their Snoot Entertainment banner, which was also behind You’re Next and The Guest. Adi Shankar (Dredd) and Spencer Silna (Lone Survivor) are also on board as producers.
