Idris Elba Replaces Jamie Foxx as Gangster Rapper in Harmony Korine Film

Idris Elba could be showing off some of his rap skills in The Trap, the upcoming film from writer-director Harmony Korine (Gummo, Mister Lonely, Spring Breakers) also starring Benicio Del Toro.

Focus Features is in final talks to pre-buy the U.S. rights to the film, which was originally set to have Jamie Foxx in the lead role.

There’s a hell of a cast currently in talks, including Al Pacino, Robert Pattinson, and James Franco.

THR broke the news, describing The Trap as follows:

Rico (Elba) is at the top of his career and about to enjoy a triumphant night at the Grammy Awards when Slim (Del Toro) is released from prison after 14 years. Slim is determined to exact revenge after learning that Rico not only achieved fame and fortune but also married his girlfriend and raised Slim’s son as his own.

Pattinson will be playing the leader of a crew of Uzi-wielding surfers hired by Del Toro’s character. Franco will play Rico’s drugged-up manager, also helping Slim out. Pacino is to play Slim’s parole officer.

It’s sounding like quite the film, and the addition of Birdman producer John Lesher simply adds to our already-heightened interest. Korine’s work has always polarised viewers, and while we aren’t fans of everything he’s done, we dug Spring Breakers.

The ever-so talented Idris Elba has shown off his musical abilities before; he’ll be more than right for the role. In case you hadn’t seen/heard…
