The promo sees Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth and Benedict Cumberbatch, among others, wondering aloud as to the whereabouts of Ant-Man/Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and The Wasp/Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) during Avengers: Infinity War.
“I don’t remember being asked to be in their movie. Just saying,” jokes Hemsworth.
“Maybe they were there,” says Hiddleston. “But they were pretty tiny.”
Well, Infinity War does offer up a bit of an explanation for where Lang and a certain other missing hero are. Let’s pick this up beneath the promo below, shall we?
Slight Infinity War spoilers ahead:
We find out in Infinity War that Ant-Man and Hawkeye/Clint Barton are out of action because they had previously made deals with the government to stay under house arrest, following their breakout at the end of Captain America: Civil War. It makes sense that they’d accept the deals, considering both sides have families to take care of.
Plus, it would have been a bit of a tonal mismatch to have Ant-Man proceed to his much-lighter antics after taking part in the hugely dramatic final few turns of Infinity War. As Infinity War co-writer Stephen McFeely told THR:
“Ant-Man the franchise is very light-hearted. It’s fun. It maybe even skews younger. If we were to put Ant-Man in this extremely heavy movie, and then have to say to the guys who are making the Ant-Man movie, ‘Yeah, he went through hell, but now go ahead and have your little romp and we’ll pick it up afterwards,’ that’s why we have to really sort of manage your interconnections and go, ‘Let’s go and hold off so you can enjoy that without feeling a bad taste in your mouth.’”
The official synopsis for the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp confirms that the film will be taking place “in the aftermath” of Civil War, meaning the plot will indeed be set before Infinity War.
Check out the new poster for the film, which arrives in Australia on July 5 and opens in the U.S. on July 6:
